Another year has gone by since our team installed more than 100 artificial hollows in areas of the Wombat and Cobaw State Forests impacted by the 2021 storms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month, and with help from Holmesglen TAFE students<\/a>, we once again inspected every hollow for occupants and any maintenance issues (see the results of our first monitoring program here<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are excited to report that almost half of the hollows now show signs of current or previous occupation (eg. nests of leaves). Occupancy has increased since 2022 where we found signs of occupation in nearly a quarter of the hollows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also found that hollows that are occupied or show signs of occupation like nests are on average 1.5m higher than hollows not occupied. We will be able to draw on these learnings during future habitat restoration projects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
