Leadbeater’s Possum – Artificial Hollows

1 July 2025

In 2024, we installed a number of hollows in 2024 across large areas of known Leadbeater’s Possum (LBP) habitat in Central Highlands, near Noojee. We used a unique combination of methods, including the Arborgrub tool, to produce natural hollows.

Following hollow installation, we installed remote cameras to monitor 23 LBP hollows over a three month period. Leadbeater’s Possums, and other native mammals and birds, readily and quickly used artificially carved hollows. The most common species using our hollows were Agile Antechinus, White-throated Treecreeper, Feather-tailed Glider, with LBP using seven hollows. Our cameras also captured rare footage of nest building behaviour in LBPs in three hollows!
