Field skills are traditionally built up through time spent in the field and from learning directly from more experienced ecologists.

Currently, there are limited options to obtain these skills. Most university courses focus on theory, and comparatively less on practice. While theory is important, potential employers place a high value on people with applied field experience, and who can work safely in outdoor environments with limited supervision.

We deliver short, field-based courses on essential field skills.

We offer these courses to natural science students and recent graduates, and early-career ecologists. We have developed and a network of five courses which focus on one of three themes:

Identification: how to correctly identify and describe what you observe in the environment.

Survey techniques: how to collect data for use in environmental assessment and monitoring.

Field safety:  how to work safely in outdoor /or remote environments.

Each of our five courses focuses on the most essential skills for field ecologists. Each course is standalone and developed and taught by experienced professional ecologists.
