We are excited to announce that, in partnership with Eco Warriors Australia and Yarra Ranges Council, we have been awarded a DEECA Green Links grant for our Planting the Seed program.
You can find more details about our Planting the Seed program here. This project will fit within an existing restoration project for the site, known as the Yering Billabongs Project (see here for more detail). This project aims to restore 60 hectares of degraded floodplain along the Yarra River and Olinda Creek, effectively extending the adjoining Spadonis Reserve. It is a collaborative effort managed by Yarra Ranges Council in partnership with Zoos Victoria, Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Aboriginal Cultural Association and Melbourne Water.
The first stage of the project has been focused on reconnecting the floodplain to encourage more natural flow patterns, improving access, pest control and targeting high threat weeds. The next stage, which the Planting the Seed program will help carry out, is to revegetate 10ha along the Olinda, Stringybark and Muddy Creeks over a two-year period.
Students from five local primary schools will help revegetate areas of degraded Floodplain Riparian Woodland, considered Endangered, and will focus on replacing tree canopy and large and medium shrubs. We can’t wait to get started on this project later this year!
